Special Tips for presenters of Medicon 2011

posted Apr 20, 2011 9:43 PM by Manu Mathew

Dear Presenters at Medicon 2011

This is Vasumathi Sriganesh and I will be teaching the component of Literature searching in the EBM preconference workshop at Medicon 2011. I am also a champion of INFORMER, in fact of medical students, and so I would like to share some tips that I myself learned at a "Communications Workshop" that I attended recently.

PRESENTATION TIPS

You have a limited time for presentation. You would love to speak about everything related to your study. But you cannot. So here's what you CAN do.

There are two elements of your talk / poster presentation

  1. What you will say
  2. How you will say it

WHAT YOU WILL SAY

Ask yourself

a)    What is your key message to the audience?

b)    What are the highlights of your study?

·         Don’t try to give too many details. Give only the Tip of the Iceberg. Any more detail can be given when the audience asks questions.

·         Oral presenters: Whatever you can confidently speak about – don’t put up on slides - beyond words / phrases / smallest sentences.

·         Tell and show - ie speak, catch people's eye and THEN show the next slide

·         At the end, once again - give your "key message" - which is then what the audience remembers.

·         Poster presenters – let your poster speak. Just say a few lines about what is most important. Then let the audience ask questions. Give simple answers to questions

HOW WILL YOU SAY IT

Give a message & Tell a story: Forget that you are “making a presentation” or "talking about a topic". Tell a story. When you do that it is like sharing it with a group of friends. Topics could be boring, but people can make them great!

Connect with people in the audience: Make eye contact with people in the audience. Don't you do that when you talk to a friend?

Slow down. Just a bit: This is not just about speaking slowly. Most of us tend to not only speak fast, but also pour out a high "Rate of ideas"! We do not give time to the audience, to absorb what we say. So how do you lower the "rate of ideas"? A very simple method is to introduce a PAUSE of a few seconds.

For eg say - "In my study I found that patients having rest plus the drug did better than patients who took the drug alone". Pause for about 3 seconds. Make eye contact with the audience and then continue. This will let them “soak up” what you just said.

Invite questions:

·      Say “I am sure you have questions; I would be happy to answer them”.

·      Pause for 2 seconds before you answer

·      Answer to the point. Don’t give “another talk” as an answer. (Practice this if you can, with your friends).

·      If anyone is aggressive with his/her question, listen and pause. (Very important). Then calmly acknowledge the other person’s view point and state something like “This is what I found, and it is interesting to note a different view point”. Explain your side once more and wrap it up with a smile.

·      If one individual in the audience tends to ask too many questions / go into discussion mode / ask unrelated questions, politely say “Yes I can answer it, but maybe we could talk during lunch”. And just turn towards the moderators. They will take the cue and stop any extensions.

·      If you don’t get questions, just say thank you and if you wish, repeat your key message. Be comfortable doing this.

“Post-mortem”: Some presenters later tend to go into an “I wish I had done ____. Or I wish I had not done ____.” While analyzing and getting feedback is important, all you need to do is to note it down for improving your future presentations. The past cannot be changed; no post-mortems please! Remember that you had an awesome learning experience. Value it!

Have fun presenting: Medicon is a platform for you to get started. Have fun presenting. All of you are sharing ideas and experiments.

Happy presenting!!!

With special thanks to Raymond Nelson whose workshop gave me most of the inputs in this hand-out. And to Shivika Chandra for her comments and additions!

Essay competition for students on the occasion of the Third Anniversary of QMed Knowledge Foundation

posted Jan 4, 2011 3:11 AM by Akshay Sharma   [ updated Jan 4, 2011 3:13 AM ]

QMed Knowledge Foundation completed three years of existence as on the 19th of Dec.  In the last two years, for our Anniversary Celebration event, we had panel discussions on specific themes.

This year our theme is "Bringing Students and Health Science Libraries Closer", and we announce an Essay Competition on the theme.

We invite students in any discipline of Health Sciences - both UG and PG, to participate. We believe this will give students a platform to share their ideas as well as problems. And it gives us the benefit of getting a pool of ideas as well as an awareness of issues we need to tackle.

The Essay Competition

Medical libraries are an integral part of medical education, through print resources and through access to electronic information resources. In the current era there is an urgent need for students and libraries to get much closer, for a complete value in the medical education.  We all know that there are several gaps that need closure for this and QMedKF wishes to help in bridging these gaps. (Note: For convenience - we mention "medical" in our communication below - but it includes all health science institutions and libraries - dental / nursing / physiotherapy... etc)

We have listed some points that you may cover in your essay.. You may focus on any of these, some of these, or all of these. If there are any other issues that are close to your heart, do write about those too. Only remember - please write facts and not cribs. Meaning - no flaming or venting out frustrations. Feel free to add a subtitle to the main title "Bringing Students and Health Science Libraries Closer"

Here are the points that we thought of: (you could think of your library or health libraries in general when you write)

  1. How would you like library orientation to be done for anyone joining a medical college?
  2. How do you think your Library's print collection can be improved?
  3. How do you think your Library's Electronic collection / access can be improved?
  4. What Rules do you feel are outdated and need to be changed?
  5. What suggestions will you give for stopping theft and mutilation of print material?
  6. What suggestions will you give for for prevention of misuse of computers and electronic resources?. (Misuse of computers - eg - too much of personal use like emails; misuse of electronic resources - eg - too much of unnecessary downloading of articles)?
  7. What would motivate you to use library (print or electronic) resources as a "professional habit" (for education / patient care / writing etc). How do you think your faculty and librarians can help?
  8. What problems do you face with your library?

Eligibility:

·      Current students (both UG and PG) in any stream of health sciences including recent graduates, from India

·      Faculty / Employed or in-practice professionals are also openly welcome to participate, but prizes will be awarded only to students / recent graduates

 Word limit:

We recommend that your essay be around 1000 words; however we are not imposing a limit, just in case any of you needs to write longer essays, to communicate your ideas.

Deadline:

Last date to receive essays: 20-01-2011

Submission:

·      Send your essays by email to – info[at]qmedkf.org.in

·      In the body of your email, please let us have your full name, email id and mobile number, the course you are doing (eg – MBBS 6th Sem /  BDS – 2nd year / MD Med 2008)

Prizes

  • The top three prize winners will become "Friends of QMed Knowledge Foundation" for one year. This makes them eligible to attend our training programs, and get help from us for literature searches, articles and medical writing queries. Full details about the "Friends of the Foundation" program will be announced on our website soon. In addition, they will get subject books of their choice worth Rs 2500/-, Rs. 2000/- and Rs. 1500/- respectively
  • The prize winning entries will also be published on our website.
  • All participants will receive a certificate of participation
  • Best suggestions will also be posted on our website and credits to those who made these suggestions will also be put up

The Event

ON the 29th of Jan (the day of our Anniversary Celebration) - we will have a panel discussion amongst students who attend the event. We will put forth suggestions received and have further discussions on these to make plans to take things ahead.

Note: Attendance at the event will be based on Registration which is completely free. We regret we cannot sponsor travel / accommodation for those who wish to attend the event.
